Puerto Rico Creates 8-team Soccer League (ap)
Puerto Rico has created a soccer league of eight teams that will debut in a 56-game tournament. Four teams have international backing from Argentina’s River Plate, Brazil’s Fluminense, Mexico’s Pachuca and Spain’s Sevilla. Ponce River Plate will play San Juan Athletic in the tournament’s first game on Saturday.

Rangers Place Rhp Benoit On 15-day Dl (ap)
The Texas Rangers placed pitcher Joaquin Benoit on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of right shoulder inflammation. The Rangers purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Dustin Nippert from Triple-A Oklahoma. The right-handed Benoit is 3-2 with a 5.60 ERA and one save in 34 games. The move is retroactive to July 3.

Gasol Leads Spain Into Olympic Semis (ap)
Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol scored 20 points to lead world champion Spain to a 72-59 win against Croatia Wednesday in men’s basketball. Felipe Reyes added 13 points for Spain, while Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon added 10. Gasol also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Marko Banic had 15 points to lead Croatia.

Patriots Sign Ol Welbourn (ap)
Offensive lineman John Welbourn, who started every game at right guard last season for Kansas City, signed Monday with the New England Patriots. The Patriots also released rookie defensive lineman Chris Norwell. Welbourn joins the Patriots about a month before they open their season against his former team in Foxborough on Sept.
